Convergent and Divergent Thinking

COLLAPSE

A brief description of the problem along with your list of solutions, the solution you selected, and the justification for your selection.

Divergent thinking first produces many possible solutions to a problem. Then convergent thinking is used to select the most possible solutions and reject the other solutions. Everybody is capable of both convergent and divergent thinking, depending on the situation. However, it’s natural to lean more toward one or the other when approaching problems and projects (Boogaard, 2018). The problem I faced is making the right hiring decision. Choosing between your final candidates can be agonizing. If you choose wrong, you’re going to end up dealing with a few of the other problems (McCarthy, 2019).

Solutions for this problem:

  • Look for Someone With a Commitment to Their Career.
  • Test for Excellent Learning and Analytical Skills.
  • Check Compatibility.
  • Keep Improving the Hiring Process.

If a candidate is not loyal to any company, hiring this person could definitely be a problem for your business.  A candidate with confidence is great, but what you really want is a candidate that has the right skills and educational requirements. if a person cannot get along with his or her current clients or previous bosses, it’s not such a great idea to hire that candidate. It’s also a good idea to involve other people in the evaluation process since more opinions can lead to finding the right hire (Olenski, 2016).

Next, describe the experience of using divergent thinking and convergent thinking. If you had not approached the problem using divergent and convergent practices in a systematic way, would you have arrived at the same solution? Explain why or why not.

Creativity is characterized by two different processes: divergent and convergent thinking. Divergent thinking is generating ideas in the workplace. Convergent thinking happens when people evaluate ideas to conclude appropriate thinking. Convergent judges the ideas and divergent thinking determine the suitability of the idea. Both convergent and divergent thinking are important for creative problem solving and project planning—which means you should have time set aside for each of them (Boogaard, 2018).

Finally, explain any aspects of culture that could either inhibit or support this creative process.

Convergent thinking usually relies on evaluation and knowledge. This may take experience and may slowly build over time. This is when I realized this, convergent thinking is a different process from divergent thinking. I can practice allowing myself to generate ideas without judgment. I will apply convergent thinking to evaluate the suitability of ideas that will come with divergent thinking. This will get better with practice, such as practicing brainstorming and mind mapping.

When engaging in brainstorming, the ideas generated are not judged immediately. Evaluations come after brainstorming and I try to brainstorm individually before going to my team. Creativity and creative problem solving play important roles in both my personal and professional life. Divergent thinking is responsible for generating creative ideas in my professional life.

RE: Discussion – Week 3

COLLAPSE

Convergent and Divergent Thinking

A brief description of the problem along with your list of solutions, the solution you selected, and the justification for your selection.

To gain an effective solution to a problem, it takes both convergent and divergent thinking and not just one. When using divergent thinking a person or a team comes up with many possibilities of potential solutions to the problem. We use convergent thinking when we narrow down the options to the best possible solution.

Many problems presented themselves, to my company, during the Covid19 pandemic. The largest problem was finding a way to maintain income in order to deter furloughing many staff members and potentially causing others to burn out due to the increased demands with fewer staff members.

The solutions the company came up with as a whole included:

  1. Salary cuts for all fulltime salaried employees
  2. Reduce the office hours, while patient numbers are low
  3. Offering telemedicine platform
  4. Offer onsite PCR testing at select offices
  5. Offer IgG antibody testing at all location

My company was able to apply each section of critical thinking to come up with these solutions and put them into action. We successfully applied affirmative judgment to not only identify the strengths of the ideas, but also to continually work to overcome any and all flaws that come up with these solutions. As a team, we were able to iron out and adjust when needed to allow for positive outcomes of our initiatives and created a successful alternative in order to deal and work within the confines that Covid19 has presented the medical community. My company has stayed focused and continues to brainstorm new ideas for what the future may look like (Puccio, et al., 2012).

Next, describe the experience of using divergent thinking and convergent thinking. If you had not approached the problem using divergent and convergent practices in a systematic way, would you have arrived at the same solution? Explain why or why not.

As a company, we approached this process with divergent and convergent thinking. At times it was difficult as we were all working remotely from each other. We had regular zoom meetings in order to discuss ideas and the solutions we saw as best and discussed how to implement these solutions in a quick and effective manner. I think it was helpful that many people have used this process before and this brought a higher comfort level with this process of thinking and team dynamics. As a group we were able to brainstorm and bring ideas to the forefront for discussion and evaluation (Puccio, et al., 2012). I found this process to be incredibly helpful and it flowed naturally for me. I anticipate using this process on a very regular basis for all problems or issues that need to be addressed and solved at my place of employment.

Finally, explain any aspects of culture that could either inhibit or support this creative process.

I did not experience many cultural aspects that inhibited the flow of ideas during the creative thinking process. Due to the variety of people that we have on our staff and on the Covid19 team, there are certain aspects that could have created a slight problem at minimum. There are many people from many different areas of the United States, from different heritages, from different lines of work. All of these aspects could present a problem as each person thinks differently views the problem in a different manner. Any individual could potentially get “stuck” and become less open minded of the potential solutions creating a roadblock. My team was able to listen and hear each team member and truly listened to each person’s ideas. We came together as a team to solve a problem and were successful in reaching a solution and implementing the solution. My company was able to make it through the Covid19 pandemic thus far with only having to furlough a few individual employees. It also appears that due to the solutions we put in place that all furloughed employees with return to work within the month. All salaries are scheduled to return to normal in approximately 6 weeks. My company worked in credibly hard and we are all very happy to have been successful during this scary and turbulent time.
