Understanding Specific Learning Disabilities

Students with high-incidence disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia, and related disorders face challenges in and outside of the academic setting. Having a thorough understanding of these challenges and how they can affect students and families is essential in supporting these students and working collaboratively with their families and other stakeholders to ensure that their needs are being met.

You have been tasked with creating a professional development session for general education teachers and support staff to learn about specific learning disabilities, their effects on students, and how interventions such as Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) can be used to support students with specific learning disabilities.

Create a 500-750 word takeaway piece that summarizes the information presented and can be used as a future reference by session participants. This can be an infographic, handout, brochure, etc. The resource should address the following:

  • Define specific learning disabilities and provide examples of how these disabilities can create challenges that affect learning and other areas of the student’s life.
  • Explain how interventions such as MTSS can be utilized to support students with specific learning disabilities. Provide two real-world examples to support your ideas.
  • Explain best practices for collaboration between special education and general education teachers and support staff in working with students with specific learning disabilities and across academic settings.
  • Consider the tenets of the Christian worldview perspective and explain how teachers can create a classroom environment and culture that respects and values the individual differences displayed by all students, regardless of disability.
