My personal vision statement: Develop a community that is dedicated to teaching, learning and loving each student by leading by example, collaborating and maintain high expectations for everyone involved.
My personal mission statement: To try and positively influence everybody I meet and to encourage everyone to help each other live a respectful, honest, lifestyle while not losing sight of what is most important to them.
In order to guides others we must change our thinking from teacher-centered community learning to student-center learning. “Providing students the opportunity to lead in the classroom is a great way to develop a student-centered learning environment that fosters engagement, growth and empowers students to take ownership of the learning experience” (Loveless, 2019). Educational leaders and teachers should create a strong vision and mission statement together because it will lead to more collaboration that will then carry into the classroom for our students.
The vision and mission should emphasize that all students should meet the expectation of content and performance because each child deserves success. I believe this is one of the reasons why we have the No Child Left Behind Act, so that we can continue to develop standards to help all students achieve. It is important that the educational leaders and teachers refer back to the statements multiple times throughout the year in order to maintain success. Every student should be a part of creating the culture and carrying out the expectations that teachers and leaders want of them.
There are a few barriers that could develop when making a vision and mission statement. Communicating in developing common goals, language and standards could be a barrier. Another barrier that could develop is staff members not on board because they do not like change or do not agree with the statements. In order to help overcome these barriers leaders must communicate expectations, talk to the entire staff together and possibly have individuals meet 1:1 to understand both sides and work towards a common ground.
Technology is a part of the 21st century learner. I believe one way we can use technology is to have the vision and mission statements be on an outside scroll and show it during the morning announcements daily. We could use the district statements at every building because it would show commonality and hopefully be embedded with everyone in the community.

“Without careful examination, discussion, articulation, and clarification of the school mission, educational professionals who work together closely on a daily basis may interpret their purpose very differently, each assuming a different reason for why they do the work that they do” (Gurley, Peters, Collins & Fifolt, 2015, p. 222). Therefore, it’s vital to communicate the vision and mission statements to the school community. However, before sharing it, the creation of such statements need to occur, which both vision and mission statements involve a lot of reflection. I enjoyed watching the videos from Ken Jandes because he helped me understand, even more than the lectures, how different the mission statement is from the vision statement and what each one includes.
The mission and vision statements are similar in the fact that all students are included in these statements of beliefs and needs. Obviously, “Passion and clarity must also be reflected in the school’s vision and mission statements” (Zimny, 2019, Week 3, Slide 3). This passion is for all students to succeed because all students matter: “school improvement experts also assert that the primary mission of schools is to effect high levels of learning for all students” (DuFour et al. 2008 as cited by Gurley et al., 2015, p. 227). Teachers and leaders need to include all students because they are the reasons we make the decisions we do; they are the impetus, the motivation, the incentive for our actions.
One main challenge I foresee in the process of creating vision and mission statements is the fact that many people are working together and will have different visions and missions of their own. This is where the leader/principal needs to clearly communicate his/her goals and the data he used, for principals “design schools around their beliefs, their students’ needs, and what the research tells them about how students learn best” (Zimny, 2019, Week 3, Slide 2). Therefore, the use of data and beliefs needs to be clearly communicated to all faculty so these statements provide an understanding for them and they see everyone’s vital role in making this vision and mission a reality.
These statements need to be referred to and reiterated throughout the school year, at the start of faculty meetings, department meetings, PD experiences, etc. They should also be on the wall(s) of the schools, whether in main gathering areas, or classrooms. In the high school I work in, we have our mission statement written in one of the hallways, but it’s not the main hallway, and students who walk that specific hall only see it. We don’t refer to our mission statement during meetings either. This is something that could definitely be improved.
My vision statement: We see students engaged in meaningful and fruitful conversations where insight is shared and active listening is occurring. We see students and staff fostering a love of reading, establishing a culture of readers. Teachers and students are engaged in conversations about books, sharing their wisdom and their books with one another. Students and teachers show kindness and respect in multiple ways, whether it’s helping another whose backpack opened in the hallway, holding the door open for someone, greeting others as they walk in a classroom, etc. We see teachers being flexible and passionate about students and their emotional well being as well as their academic success. Teachers are able to motivate and empower students by instilling critical thinking skills, problem-solving skills, and core values such as integrity, honesty, compassion, perseverance, and respect. Finally, we see a school that is safe and welcoming, where students are challenged and meet and exceed expectations in order to be college and career ready.
My mission statement: Due to our high expectations, effective programs, and the nurturing, safe, collaborative environment, we ensure all students will reach their full potential and graduate prepared to become responsible, productive, respectful members of society.
