World War II contributed to the development of federal government in the United States.
One theory is that organizations that were given extra resources or power during the war could
hold them after the war because the offices and their supporters could exploit wastefulness and
idleness in the political procedure. The public, also, it is said, had gotten used to higher taxes
during the war, so it was a bit much for the legislature to bring down taxes the distance to their
prewar level.
