When instructing students with language, visual, and hearing impairments, it is often necessary to adapt content so it can be accessible to students. The ability to identify and implement both high- and low-tech augmentative and alternative communication (ACC) devices and strategies to allow students with language, visual, and hearing impairments to access and engage in curricular resources and classroom activities is imperative to meeting the unique needs of these students.
Imagine you are the teacher for a group of students with language, visual, and hearing impairments. Select a grade level that you are most interested in working with or currently work with and identify a book that is typically read by students in this grade level. Think about AAC devices and strategies that can be implemented to allow your students to engage with the book and complete curricular activities associated with reading the book. Consider both high- and low-tech options that would be appropriate for students based on their age and exceptionalities. Also consider factors such as environmental modifications, cost, training, maintenance, and the collaboration that must be established and exhibited between teachers, support staff, and service providers. Complete the “Selecting AAC †template to outline how you will utilize AAC supports with your students.
Support the assignment with a minimum of three scholarly resources.
